It’s not hard to feel the culture shock when you are from the West Coast and live in Ithaca for the majority of the year – and it’s not hard to miss, either. Here are just a few ways to spot our lovely West Coasters around campus:
1) They don’t understand the seasons

West Coasters tend to be amazed by the beauty of the changing seasons, so if you see someone freaking out about the piles of leaves on the ground, you can be sure they aren’t from around here.
2) They aren’t dressed appropriately for the weather

Leave it up to the student from Washington to think that flip flops are acceptable foot attire in January and suede boots are okay to wear in the rain. Where they’re from, the forecast usually calls for 75 degrees with an extreme chance of sunshine.
3) The rain freaks them out

This is especially true if you spot someone from California.
4) They can’t jaywalk

Jaywalking is a foreign concept to most West Coasters. So please, be considerate and wait for your West Coast friend on the other side of the road if they are too hesitant to cross the street at the same time as you.
5) They use different slang words

Such as “swooped”, “dank, and “hella.”
6) And, of course, you can usually tell someone is from the West Coast by their very chill outlook on life.

Everyone just seems more laid back from the West Coast, and we love them for that.
