8 Awesome Reasons to Attend Asia Night: The Journey

Author: Hannah Gendel

On March 5th, the Cornell Asian Pacific Islander Union (CAPSU) will host Asia Night: The Journey, from 8pm-1am. Expected to draw 1,500 Cornellians to Duffield Hall, this event is the organization’s biggest cultural event of the year. With interactive performances, club presentations, prize contests and other events that celebrate different aspects of various Asian cultures, this is a night that is sure to be memorable. Here’s why you should make Asia Night part of your Saturday night plans:

1. Cornell Bhangra performers

For the past 19 years, Cornell Bhangra has maintained an impressive reputation. With their recent appearance on America’s Got Talent, it’s safe to say they’ve surpassed their mission of promoting Punjabi dance and culture through their performances both on and off campus.

2. Duffield Hall is a prime location

Duffield Hall is close to Collegetown and many libraries on campus. Take a break from your last minute prelim cramming and stop by the main atrium area of Duffield Hall to immerse yourself in Asian culture.

3. Incredible food for a great price

For only $3, you can expand your palate with a vast array of different foods and flavors. Rumor has it that Illumination Dance Troupe’s dumplings will be delectable. Plus, it’s that time of the semester to press pause on the dining hall routine.

4. Yamatai’s taiko drums

It’s not every day you come across a drum wider than your arm span. Beat the rainy blues and learn how to create a unique beat alongside the experienced Yamatai drummers. (Fun fact: “taiko” means “big drum” in Japanese.)

5. Awesome prizes

Take a chance! You could win anything from a Taste of Thai gift card to Noria Wireless Speakers. All you have to do is find the raffle booth, put your name down, and hope it’s your lucky day.

6. Meaningful clubs are recruiting

Still looking to get involved in new extracurriculars? The atrium of Duffield Hall will be lined up with club booths eager for new members. Project Hope, for instance, provides impoverished school children in rural China with support and funds to receive their education.

7. The Cornell Lion Dance will boost your spirits

You won’t be able to resist dancing along to the rhythm of the animated Cornell Lion. Keeping an ancient Chinese ritual alive, these synchronized performers combine martial arts and dance to mimic the real movements of a lion.

8. HanChum’s traditional Korean dance will take your breath away

No dance TV show can compare to these dancers draped in red and yellow silks, who incorporate their fans in the most elegant manner.

Mark your calendars for this Saturday, March 5th and prepare to celebrate a night of Asian culture– without having to leave campus.
