No two bookshelves are alike. Everyone’s tastes are different, and that’s largely because we all have different personalities. Different people will find certain books compelling, interesting or moving based on their individual traits. If you’re looking for a good book, here are some recommendations to fit every personality type.
For the daring
If you love to explore the darker side of human nature, In Cold Blood is a must read. Largely hailed as Truman Capote’s masterpiece, the novel details the circumstances surrounding the murders of four members of the Clutter family in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas. The story is full of suspense, as it glimpses into the minds of their killers in the aftermath of the murders. Gripping and powerful, In Cold Blood is truly perfect for any thrill-seeker.
For the giving
For those interested making a difference in the world, check out Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. This personal memoir follows Mortenson as he fulfills his goal of building a school for impoverished mountain villagers in Pakistan. He went on to build 55 schools, which were aimed at promoting education for women in these isolated and dangerous regions. A great read for the do-gooder, this book will inspire you to take on your own humanitarian causes.
For the sensitive
If you’re a sensitive type, Like Water for Chocolate is the book for you. This novel follows the life of a young girl named Tita, who longs to marry her lover Pedro. However, her duty to uphold the family tradition whereby the youngest daughter must care for her mother until she dies prevents Tita from doing so. Tita uses cooking to express her sadness in this emotional and heartbreaking tale.
For the romantic
For those in need of a fun and light read, I recommend Laura Dave’s novel, Eight Hundred Grapes. This story follows the life of Georgia Ford, as she returns home to her family’s vineyard in anticipation of her wedding. However, not everything goes as planned as secrets come out of the woodwork. Full of exciting family drama, this book explores the meaning of family, love and, perhaps most importantly, wine.
For the mindful
The Happiness Project is a perfect read for for those trying to cultivate a sense of calm within their lives. This book is a personal tale by Gretchin Rubin, as she chronicles her journey to increase the happiness in her life. Rubin shows what is really important in her life, and her book sheds light on what really matters.
For the fun-loving
Mindy Kaling’s first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, is the ideal read for those who are looking for a fun read. This light and entertaining book is personal and inviting, as Kaling exposes personal and embarrassing stories, including one in which she was as caught eating the snacks at the house where she babysat. As ridiculous as they are memorable, Kaling’s stories will have you laughing to yourself all day long.
For the imaginative
For those into sci-fi and fantasy, Never Let Me Go is an exciting and eye-opening tale. Author Kazuo Ishiguro brings the reader to a universe where people are used purely as “donors” and “carers” harvested for their organs. Equal parts eerie, personal and heartfelt, this novel shows a scary alternative to our world through the innocent eyes of its protagonist, Kathy H.
For the foodie
Garlic and Sapphires is a memoir by Ruth Reichl, a food critic for Gourmet Magazine. In it, she describes her experiences eating at the finest and most delicious restaurants in New York – and the characters she must dress up as to hide her identity. This book will make your mouth water as Reichl describes her many amazing meals.
