Cornell fell to Colgate Saturday afternoon in a staggering 44-3 defeat.
After holding Colgate to a mere three points in the first quarter, the Big Red rush defense fell apart, allowing 28 points on four consecutive rushing touchdowns in seven minutes and twenty seconds of play in the second quarter.
On the day, the Cornell defense gave up 440 yards on the ground, including a school-record 291 yards from running back Nate Eachus and 102 yards from quarterback Greg Sullivan. Eachus and Sullivan each tallied three rushing touchdowns on the afternoon.
Scattered between the Raider’s scores were moments where Cornell seemed to be putting a string of consistently solid plays together. Each time, however, the Big Red couldn’t convert and put points on the board. A slew of Colgate penalties throughout the game gave a glimmer of hope during Big Red drives, but it wasn’t enough to push the ball into the end zone. A fumble, an interception and seven sacks hurt the Big Red further, as the game slipped away. The only Cornell score was the result of a Brad Greenway 36-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
Despite being physically outmatched and outplayed, head coach Kent Austin saw positives from his special teams unit. After the game, Austin acknowledged special teams as the one area of the game that the red won. A blocked punt and Greenway's field goal stood out as highlights while senior cornerback Rashad Campbell contributed 164 yards on kick returns.
Campbell noted the special teams’ improvement since the Yale game, attributing much of the success to the motivating special teams coach, Travis Burkett.
With the loss, Cornell slipped to 1-4 for the season, while Colgate improved to 4-2 and picked up their program’s 600th win. The Big Red cannot focus on the loss for long though, as they head to Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday to take on Brown University at 12:30 pm.
