Obama and Meyers poke fun at Trump during White House Correspondents Dinner
May 1, 2011 —By Abdul Taylor Obama and Meyers poke fun at Trump during White House Correspondents Dinner by Abdul Taylor United States President Barack Obama made Donald Trump the butt of his jokes in a speech at the 20111 White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. last night, making light of the birth certificate controversy that the real estate mogul had made the centerpiece of his campaign to run for the Republican nomination for President. Obama was speaking at the annual event that calls for the president to do a bit of comedy. His main target was Trump, who was at the event as guest of the Washington Post. While viewing the video of the Obama’s comedy act, I noticed that Trump seemed pretty uncomfortable as the president mocked his birther crusade. Obama poked fun at Trump and his work on his NBC reality show “The Apprentice,” focusing on his decision last month to fire Gary Busey instead of rock singer Meat Loaf. “These are the types of decisions that would keep me up at night,” Obama joked. “Well done, sir.” Obama said he would begin his remarks with a supposed video of his own birth—a reference to the media attention surrounding questions of his birthplace—and then showed a clip from Disney’s “The Lion King.” Comedian Seth Meyers, a cast member of SNL: Saturday Night Live, was the night’s main comedic voice. “Donald Trump often talks about running as a Republican, which is surprising,” Meyers said. “I assumed he was running as a joke.” In additional, Meyers said, “Donald Trump owns the Miss USA Pageant, which is great for Republicans because it will stream line their search for a vice president.” During Meyers’ bit, Trump can be seen in the video staring icily back. I found the entire video to be quite hilarious. This is not the first time President Obama has conveyed his comedic nature. During his speech at the 2009 Radio & TV Correspondents Dinner, Obama made cracks about Brian Williams and Wolf Blitzer amongst others. Despite the criticisms Obama has received since his election, he had much to say about the controversy surrounding his birthplace, as well as about Donald Trump, the man who has been driving that controversy, Saturday night at the White House Correspondents Dinner. He also managed to take gentle shots at Matt Damon, Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman and Fox News.
