National and International News: Smaller Cell Phones, Sardines, and Unrest in Ivory Coast

by jenny.schlesinger 1 month ago

Satellite Takes Second

Thought your cell phones were getting smaller? Well Cornell University engineers just released a new satellite one - one hundredth of the normal size that placed second in the University Nanosatellite Program. This program is run by the Air Force research academy and the winner is able to finalize plans for an actual space launch date. The satellite was aptly named Violet for the built in ultraviolet spectrometer and packs a lot of power with new control moment gyroscopes. These CMGs provide torque for the satellite and makes the smaller satellite more agile. This agility is unmatched, with Violet sporting eight CMGS compared to the normal two or three used my other satellites. Violet can be used in earth imaging programs as well as space exploration projects, making the satellite versatile as well. Although the Cornell satellite didn't win, the aerospace industry took enough of a liking to it, that there could be a 2012 launch for Violet.

Sardine Plague a Sight to Sea

The expression 'packed like sardines' took on an entirely new meaning this week at the King Harbor in Redondo Beach California. Around one million sardine fish were found floating dead in the marina Tuesday March 8th. With about fourteen-hundred boats docked, many of them were unable to move because the sardines were packed as high as eighteen inches in some spots. Researchers concluded that pollutants were not the cause of this event, and according to the Fish and Wildlife Department, the phenomenon is a natural occurrence. In order to escape high winds, sardines took refuge in the marina bank. Crowding and the inability to find their way out lead to a lack of oxygen causing widespread deaths. As Bacteria began to feed, more oxygen was depleted causing an exponential rise in the death rate. All is not lost in this situation as the fish will be recycled into fertilizer to avoid any further public health risks.

Protest and Unrest in Ivory Coast

BBC news reported Tuesday a march protesting the killing of female demonstrators has left four more (Three men and one woman) dead in Abidjan in this week. There has recently been uprising against President Laurent Gbagbo who refuses to step down from the seat after losing in last year’s vote to Alassane Ouattara. The Ivory Coast is economically stimulated by the cocoa industry which would fuel a desire and struggle to stay in power. The cocoa prices and trading have resulted in sanctions and halted exports as well as effects from bank collapses. The four demonstrators were acknowledging International Women’s Day when presidential rogue officers were believed to fire shots. The ivory Coast has bred unrest the past weeks with three hundred thousand residents seeking refuge from the fighting and seventy thousand crossing to find calmer environments in Libya. A ceasefire still upholds between Ouattara rebels and Gbagbo army in the north and south respectively, however after Gbagbo refused to attend an African Union meeting Thursday. It’s hard to tell how long it will last.

Uprising in Libya

by kristen.steves 1 month ago

Last week we reported on UN sanctions implemented in response to the uprising in Libya. This week, the clashes continue, showing no signs of shopping. In the past four weeks, opposition forces have taken control of eastern Libya. Gadhafi's regime has held on to the capital of Tripoli. Death toll estimates range from more than 1000 to as many as 2000. The war has displaced 215000 people, most poor migrant workers stranded at the Tunisian and Egyptian borders.

US and Mexico reach proposed deal over trucking dispute

Violetta Torres-Baron

The US and Mexico have reached a proposed deal to open US highways to Mexican trucks, raising hopes of an end to a 20-year dispute. US President Barack Obama said the nations had “found a clear path to resolving” the roadblock in relations. US and Mexican trucks were previously authorized to cross their shared border under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, but the US has refused to allow Mexican trucks access amid concerns over their ability to meet US safety and environmental standards. According to Mr. Obama the plan would now be taken to Congress.

No More survivors in New Zealand Earthquake

Violetta Torres-Baron

No more survivors of the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand are likely to be found and the task is recovery, not rescue say relief officials. Key buildings in the city, struck by a shallow quake of magnitude 6.3 last Tuesday are being scoured for bodies. The official toll is now 161. The first foreign victims have been formally names- two Israeli tourists. Power, transport and sewage systems are gradually being restored but rebuilding the city is a daunting task. The civil Defense national controller John Hamilton announced the shift from rescue to recovery “with considerable sorrow and frustration”. Now, rebuilding costs are put at billions of dollars. It is estimated that up to a third of the city’s buildings have been or will have to be demolished.

Wheat Research Program Receives $40 million

Violetta Torres-Baron

Cornell’s Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat program will receive $40 million over the next five years from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the British Government to combat a particular strain of stem rust infections that could threaten global food security. According to Professor Sarah Nell Davidson, the strain is one of the worst diseases of wheat that can cause real devastation. Various strains of the disease have been causing devastation on the world’s food supply for over 2,000 years. Davidson added that it’s thought to have caused some of the major famines in the Bible. The purpose of the grant is to fight the Ug99 strain which was first discovered in Uganda in 1998 and has since spread to Kenya, Ethiopia, Yemen, Iran and South Africa. The grant is to work towards finding new types of genetic resistance of wheat.

New Zealand in Recovery

Kristina Brooks With police and residents still searching for 300 missing people, the death count from Tuesday's earthquake in New Zealand has rose from 65 to 75 in less than a day. South Island city in Christchurch was hit with the earthquake during a very busy lunch hour, at a depth of 3.1 miles and a magnitude of 6.3 according to BBC news. Residents were still receiving from an earthquake that hit in september measuring 7.2 and damaged about two thirds of Christchurch homes. Authorities are working with dogs to investigate the ruins of homes churches and office buildings to find missing residents and facilitate contact among family members. Organizations like the Red Cross are setting up refuges for those who have lost homes. The Grand Chancellor hotel, Christchurch second largest building has now been blocked off due to the chance it could collapse at any point. Earthquakes aren't uncommon to New Zealand however only a small percentage ever reach above 5.0. Relief efforts continue as international leaders offer sympathies.

Planting a New Tradition

Kristina Brooks Thought you had enough of the winter weather this past weekend? Everyone, including the sturdiest of monuments, felt the effects of the powerful winds that hit the east coast. Sunday, on the grounds just a bit away from the White house in Washington DC, the National Christmas Tree of the United states, cracked and was blown down after standing since 1978. No one was hurt as the park was essentially empty, leaving officials thankful. It is an american tradition to erect a tree near the Washington Monument that was started by president Coolidge in 1923. President Carter's term gave rise to the second tree which grew until this weekend's storm. Within a few short hours of falling the tree was shredded to mulch and plans were discussed for a new one. The National Park Service expects to see the new tree in place later this spring.

Is Zimbabwe next for a Democratic revolt? Probably not…

Katia Lin

On Tuesday February 22, dozens of students, trade unionists, and political activists gathered in Johannesburg, Zimbabwe to watch video clips of Al Jazeera and BBC News. 46 are now in custody, accused of attempting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe’s present dictatorial regime in favor of a constitutionally elected government. And the evidence used against them? A video projector, two DVD discs, and a laptop. Also materials a ten year old technology enthusiast would have in his bedroom. But Mugabe’s party, which has retained its power for 29 years by threatening, beating, and arresting political opponents, similar to that of Hosni Mubarak’s former party in Egypt, is nervous. With revolts across Northern Africa, incarcerating citizens for watching BBC news is Mugabe’s way of warning emboldened activists against any action similar to that of the Tunisian or Egyptian citizens. However, because Zimbabweans are among the world’s poorest people, lacking vital resources such as a widely accessible internet, Dictator Mugabe may have nothing to worry about after all.

Pepsi Helps Farmers in Mexico

Katia Lin

Once upon a time, the farmers of San Gabriel, a small Mexican village, would have to dangerously trudge north across mountains just to perform random jobs and cover debts built up from cultivating their small corn fields. However, they need not travel any longer. Pepsi Co has begun buying locally produced corn, because its price does not fluctuate as much as shipping prices do. This transition to purchasing small-farm Mexican corn has not only proven to be lucrative for the international corporation, but also for some 300 small farmers who  no longer have to sell to middle men and worry about demand. Now that they have a secure buyer, some plant twice as much, giving them a stable, and higher, income. There is speculation that with these higher incomes will come improved nutrition and education standards, in addition to a decrease in illegal immigration and even a decrease in marijuana production. So next time you think about buying that Pepsi, but say to yourself, “nah, I don’t need it,” just remember that that can represents an improvement in Mexican society.

Magic Mushrooms Fill Classroom Seats

By Kristina Brooks

Lions, Tigers and… Fungus? Oh my. Encroaching upon its second decade, Cornell University course "Magical Mushrooms, Mysterious Molds" is gaining popularity professor George Hundler had never imagined. What started out as an expectation of maybe 30 students in it's first year, the class sports an average of 250-300 students. This spring however, the number just about doubled with 520 students enrolled. Hundler originally was fascinated by what he saw budding under a microscope back during undergraduate study, and brought that passion to the front of the Cornell classroom. In 1998, he wrote a book which shares the same name as the course and is not only used as a supplement here, but in universities all over the United states. Students are captivated by his engaging teaching style and continue to be intrigued by the subject matter. Highlights to the course include a take home slime mold and growing oyster mushrooms. In being so versatile they can both create antibiotics and cause some of the most widespread epidemics, much is to be learned about fungus and molds. Next time you're looking for inspiration for those extra few credits, look no further than the mushrooms that could be growing in your own backyard.

Is it getting hot in here?

By Katia Lin

On February 18 at 4:30pm, it was announced that Cornell Haynes Jr, also known as Nelly, will be performing at Slope Day 2011. Starting with his hit solo Country Grammar, Nelly, or Cornell should I say, has continued his successful career with hit singles such as Air Force Ones, Say It Right, and Just a Dream released in his newest album 5.0. Equally exciting, the Cornell Concert Committee has landed artist, Lupe Fiasco to perform just one month ahead. Although this weekend we have a high of 32 degrees, with such popular performers such as Nelly and Lupe Fiasco, I think it’s appropriate to say, that it’s about the get hot in here.

Proposition 19: Why it failed, what it entailed, and will debate prevail?

by Lindsay Rothfeld 5 months ago

Any Californian in hopes of finally being able to possess marijuana legally was surely disappointed when the “Regulate, Control & Tax Cannabis Act” was defeated by 53.9%. Did the bill fail because of voter apathy, fear of change, or lack of clarity in the proposition? While this may never be known, the debate over whether Proposition 19 should have been passed will not subside.

Proposition 19 would have made legal under state law for Californians 21 and older the act of possessing up to one ounce of marijuana and growing a 25 square feet plot. However, the proposition was unclear in the fact that it required cities and counties to use discretion when imposing taxes, structuring the retail sales, etc. Up until voting day the ‘Yes’ and “No’ campaigns were nearly split in their support due to not only the Prop’s various benefits and downfalls, but also to its ambiguity.

The ‘Yes’ Campaign

The driving force of this campaign was economic concern and incentive. The state of California is about $19 million in debt, and with an estimated 400.000 individuals using marijuana for medical use and about 2 million doing so illegally, the State Board of Equalization predicted $1.4 billion could be attained annually from the proposed taxation. Not only that, but also a considerable sum of money could have be saved from the prevention of incarcerations.

An advertisement released in late October for the “Yes” campaign narrated the following: “Let police lock up real criminals. Let the state stop wasting money on outdated pot laws. Bring up to 2 billion dollars a year to California. If we vote then we win. So vote and we win.” This ad was placed on channels such as Comedy Central in order to target young voters.

Another point that was brought up during campaigning was the fact that individuals would continue to smoke pot whether or not the action was legalized, so why not regulate it?

The ‘No’ Campaign

The ‘No’ campaign was considerably smaller than its opposition and targeted voters through radio commercials, for the most part. One advertisement focused on the fact that major players in our government, including President Obama, oppose the initiative. One scenario provided involved a bus driver who smoked pot at home up until the moment he sat in his driver’s seat.

This possibility could create the danger of individuals DWS, or driving while stoned, which could become far too common and extremely hard to prosecute. Why? Marijuana stays in your bloodstream for about 30 days whether or not you are still under its influence, so officers would have to use their discretion when pulling over drivers. The real question that needed to be asked was not “How will laws change to prevent DWS?” because there would be no answer, but instead what should have been asked was “Will the proposition cause more people to drive while stoned?”

If pot were to be legalized the selling price would ultimately diminish, making it more accessible and less profitable for sellers. Also, with the ability to grow marijuana individually, marijuana providers could lose profits.

Prop 19’s Vagueness

The Prop stated that local authorities would customize the proposal for their own use, thus creating varying conditions across the state. You could potentially travel from one LA County where you were allowed to possess one ounce of pot and travel to another County that only permits possession of one eighth. This inconsistency created extremely grey areas, which helped lead to the bill’s demise.

Sociological Spin

The debate over Prop 19 raised various sociological questions relating to the relationship between law and the society. A distinguished sociologist from the late 19th century Emile Durkheim coined the term collective consciousness as a society’s shared beliefs attitudes that create a unified force. Criminal acts, according to Durkheim, are those that seem harmful to the society that represses them. What does Prop 19 say then about California’s collective consciousness, or about the danger imposed by marijuana use? Extensive marijuana use, in most cases, affects only the individual who uses it, not an entire society, whereas murder seems extremely threatening to the well being of a society, marijuana use does not. Yet, with the failure of the bill to pass, it can be observed that our society still feels threatened in some capacity by marijuana possession and use.

While the votes are in and the decision has been made, this debate will not end today and will certainly continue to be talked and argued about and might even make its way across state lines.
