How Much Do Cornellians Walk?

Author: Gaby Keane

Cornellians choose to fill their free time in many different ways – academic clubs, intramural sports, various publications, and more. But there is one unavoidable activity that takes up the majority of every student’s time: walking.

We walk a LOT on this campus. And when gigantic hills and half mile walks to class are the norm, it can be hard to fathom exactly how much walking you’re really doing.

Slope is here to help you understand just how many miles you’re logging during the daily trudge from home to class, and everywhere in between. We mapped four example routes that students may take, with all totaling over 1.5 miles.

unnamed

Green = freshman walking from North to the Engineering quad, then back to North to eat at RPCC and return to their dorm (about 2 miles).

Blue = sophomore living on West Campus walking up the Slope to the Human Ecology building, then to Olin for some studying, and finally returning back to West at the end of their day (about 1.5 miles).

Purple = junior living in lower Collegetown walking to the Ag quad for classes, Trillium for lunch, then to Olin, and then back to Collegetown (about 2.5 miles).

Yellow = senior living in upper Collegetown walking to Teagle for a morning workout, followed by Statler for classes, and then back to Collegetown (about 1.5 miles).

The miles only go up when you add in the endless deviations that individual students take to attend various activities. Stop regretting that late-night pizza–you’ve earned it!
