Justin Kurzel’s ‘Macbeth’ Undressed

Author: Izzy Pottinger

Macbeth is showing Saturday April 9 at 7:00 and Sunday April 10 at 8:00 at Cornell Cinema. For more information, please visit cinema.cornell.edu. Advance tickets can be purchased here.

Spoiler Alert: Macbeth dies at the end. But of course, you already knew that. Shakespeare’s writings have existed since the 1500s, and every year a new crop of high school sophomores is subjected to the odor of musty pages belonging to every copy of the play in existence. Think to yourself, have you ever seen a new fresh copy of Macbeth? They don’t exist. (Insert imagined musty smell here)

Let’s face facts: it’s hard to make something so essential to the literary canon at all interesting to a viewer. But there’s something about a Shakespeare play that invites endless creativity–and about Michael Fassbender’s sculpted physique–that sucked me into this rehashing of the classic play by director Justin Kurzel.

Linguistically faithful to the source material, the visuals take the starring role. Kurzel’s direction is sleek and gritty in the same breath, and has a classy flare that plays beautifully with the grim tale of the Thane of Glamis. The Scottish accents slipped sometimes, but Fassbender’s performance was generally as gorgeous as his steel blue eyes. In fact, this film is pure eye-candy, even in the gore of the numerous bloody scenes. Kurzel’s style is such that it sometimes feels like it’s a detriment to the poetic brilliance of the writing.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the Bard’s work, I would recommend popping in to the cinema this weekend to see an adaption that doesn’t stray too far from the classic. Buy a double double order of popcorn. Just make sure to ask for a ticket to “The Scottish Play” instead “Macbeth.” I doubt the Cinema staff is superstitious, but would you really want to risk bringing toil and trouble to your weekend?
