The Netflix Binge: RuPaul’s Drag Race (’09- )

ru

There’s a fierce, sassy drag queen trapped inside me, trying to get out. And she does, when I binge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

This reality competition show is one of the best things on television, and here’s why:

Everyone takes the show extremely seriously, in a completely non-serious way. Every aspect of the show is parody and over-the-top campy with mounds of self-aware instances and double entendres. It was made to have a cult following. Whether it’s the D-list judges who cast their votes at the episode’s end or the outrageous outfits the contestants pull together, the show is incredibly entertaining.

And even if you choose to fast forward and skip through the episode (which would be sacrilegious at best), you can still catch glimpses of RuPaul’s words of wisdom in her amazing catchphrases. “Gurrrl, you better work” to “You’ve got She-Male” to the episode’s ending line “If you don’t love yourself, how you gonna love anybody else, can I get an A-men?!”

The music’s incredible, including some of Ru’s best hits as well as the selections of divas across time—there’s always some great lip-synching musical choices. And speaking of lip-synching, let’s mention the show’s ultimate challenge: Lip-Synch For Your Life. It’s in this segment where the magic truly happens. I can’t really put it all into words, so just watch this clip. It shows the love and compassion between some of the queens as well as the great talent they have.

And, you know, there’s always some major queen draaaama…too many divas placed together at once can lend itself easily to that.

Everyone should just watch the show right now. As in stop reading this, log into Netflix and bathe in the beauty that is RuPaul.
