The Netflix Binge: Undeclared (2001)
February 5, 2013 —They’re weird and they’re in college. They’re Undeclared. If you’re not a fan of Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks (review to come), Girls, Forty Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad and Anchorman to name a few, then I suggest you stop reading. Undeclared is one of Apatow’s television gems that, when broadcasted, was under-appreciated and quickly kicked off the air.
The show humorously and accurately depicts a freshman year at college and does so through the eyes of some crazy lovable characters. The protagonist is a somewhat socially awkward kid (Jay Baruchel) who not only loses his virginity within the first week of college, but also is surrounded by some quirky folks, including a British ladies man (Charlie Hunnam), a wiseass (Seth Rogen) and Lizzie, girl-next door (Carla Gallo, Cornell alum!). The best character is hands down Lizzie’s crazy, long distance boyfriend (the incredible Jason Segal)
These characters are easy to relate to and the situations they find themselves in hit close to home. Whether that be the Greek Life pledging process, the strange high-school friend visit or woes of a sexiled roommate, the plotlines of each episode are entertaining to watch. Not to mention the numerous celebrity cameos, including Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and Amy Poehler.
The show is strange and wonderful in many ways. It’s a fast binge, for sure. The episodes are out of order on Netflix, so I suggest looking up the intended episode order to insure complete viewer satisfaction.
I guess it’s hard to explain the hilarity of the series with a few words, so here’s some clips that will hopefully convince you into watching the series.
