No Shave November, also known as Movember, is an initiative in which men pledge to not shave for the entirety of the month of November. They do this to raise awareness and money for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and poor mental health.

So if you notice that the guy that sits next to you in lecture has gotten a bit scruffier, remember that it’s for a cause.

Movember has caused some controversy amongst participants and bystanders. Some argue that while Movember is for a wonderful cause and allows us to raise awareness and funds for something that needs to be considered, some men just do it to be funny – and health is not a humorous thing.

Personally, I have noticed a wide variety of initiatives like No Shave November that have surfaced in our country to raise awareness for important causes. Not everyone can donate money to charity, and not everyone has the brain capacity to search for the cure to cancer, AIDS, and other diseases. So, if not shaving for one month (or dumping ice on yourself, or pinning a pink ribbon onto your backpack) is something that you can and want to do to help, then you should.

Of course, some people use these initiatives to post videos of themselves in bathing suits, or to allow themselves to be lazy and not shave for a month, but the small steps we take now pave the way for bigger steps in the future.
