Slope Studio: An Artist’s Paradise

Author: Alison Spandorfer

Do you love to relax? Are you in need of some peace and quiet? Do you enjoy meeting new people and appreciate good art? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will love Slope Studio.

What is it, you ask? Slope Studio was created by Cornellians to offer other students a peaceful place to express themselves through art; a place they could work, nap, or make new friends. Personally, I’m not much of an artist – but this semester, I decided to test it out. Located on the second floor of Willard Straight Hall, I can guarantee that this is definitely something you’ll want to try!

When a friend and I arrived at Slope Studio, we were immediately welcomed by Jessie, one of the studio’s volunteers. She then proceeded to give us a tour of the place. As one would expect, Slope Studio has many art supplies that anyone is welcome to use, from origami to colored pencils. Jessie then shared with us Slope Studio’s newest project: they’ll be turning one of their rooms into a peaceful study-space-meets-gallery. Students’ art will be displayed on the walls, and the room will be filled with comfy chairs and couches.

During our time at Slope Studio, my friend and I decided to test our skills with pastels. I drew a sunset. My friend drew vegetables. We had a peaceful time working on our art, making new friends, and just hanging out.

Slope Studio offers classes to learn different types of art, like Watercolor and Figure Studies. They’ve also organized a few group projects. For example, to celebrate the start of Slope Studio, they had participants decorate different parts of the sign (shown above). They also had a project to which anyone could contribute by popping balloons filled with paint all over a canvas. And hey – there’s nothing like bonding over art.

Let’s face it: sometimes we’re tired, sometimes we’re stressed, and sometimes we need to run inside to a warm and cozy room. Thankfully, Slope Studio offers all of that! You can even pick up some hot chocolate or popcorn upstairs in the entrance to WSH. All in all, I adored my mini-escape within Willard Straight Hall and will be sure to head back there soon!
