Yoga has always intrigued me. The Yogis that contort and stretch their bodies to limitless bounds are envious. As a “can’t-even-touch-my-toes”-kind of person, the prospect of having more control over my body has led me to wonder into different yoga classes from time to time.

Yoga is gaining popularity. People are beginning to see it for its potential as a fabulous way to have a fit body and healthy mind. With all the stress that seems to come along with being a Cornellian, the idea of learning and practicing yoga seems more practical. As another, prelim season approaches, I am starting to think I should take advantage of the classes here at Cornell.

The problem with yoga is it ‘s a bit intimidating. The different forms each have unique names that are quite the mouthful. Even at beginner’s level classes, it is easy to feel lost and wonder if yoga is meant for you at all.

I am not a Yogi, by no means. However, because I have dabbled in the art of yoga in my past and because I did a bit of Google searching, I feel comfortable sharing some of what I’ve learned.

For those with Cornell gym memberships, there are a multitude of opportunities that are conveniently located here on campus. The fitness centers offer Ashtanga Yoga, Core Power Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, Silvananda/Vinyasa combination yoga, Vinyasa yoga, and Yin/Restorative combination yoga. The schedule can be found online at the Cornell Fitness website.

Yoga may seem daunting to start, but as an amateur-yogi I know from first-hand experience that after a few classes it becomes so much easier to pick up and understand. On the bright side, yoga offers not just physical fitness and great core strength, but a relaxed and peaceful mind. What could be better?

Happy exercising! Namaste!
