Formed in 2012, MisterWives is a New York-based band whose name is a riff on the Mormon term “sister wife.” Their sound is delightfully unique, falling somewhere between indie and pop, with a jolt of energy reminiscent of the ‘80s.
Mandy Lee, lead vocalist and sole female in the five person group, explains the name. “Instead of a man marrying a bunch of women and them all becoming friends, we reversed the genders. So basically, I married all the guys and they became friends.” The group’s harmonious relationship is clear on their six track EP, Reflections, with the cacophony of sounds and instruments merging to form a bright, coherent sound.

The pop genre has become synonymous with cookie cutter lyrics, heavily synthesized vocals, and repetitive beats – all of which are engineered to appeal to the masses. MisterWives refuses to fit into this pop mold. Each song on Reflections is a joyful exploration of music, drawing on various different genres while still remaining true to the upbeat fun that defines pop music. They incorporate everything from pop and funk to R&B and rock, making this colorful sound accessible to an eclectic range of listeners.
The music video for their title track “Reflections” captures the band’s unique and energetic pop flavor, as they break out in various antics in a stuffy prep school setting. “Put me on the shelf, discipline myself to let the sparks die out. Shattering anything that has reflections of you,” Lee sings soulfully, juxtaposed by a happy electropop beat.
Reflections twinkles with life and the potential to skyrocket MisterWives to the top of the charts even before they release their first album later this month, Our Own House. Catch them live as they kick of their tour with BøRNS in March. Reflections is available on iTunes and Spotify.
