On this day in 1972, Cornell’s varsity soccer team faced Exeter University in a special match at Schoellkopf that the coach at the time, Dan Woods, called “a real test.” The British team had never lost in the United States coming into the game and were champions of the English Southern University League.

For the Big Red, the game would be its final test before the start of the regular season. Tending the goal was Bruce Arena ‘73, member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and current head coach of the United States Men’s National team.

Ultimately, the Big Red fell short, suffering a 7-3 loss against Exeter. Cornell held its own in the first half, tying the match 2-2, but was outscored 5-1 in the second half.
