The authorities in India are facing a deeply shameful incident in Karnataka, located in the south of the country. Tourists who came to admire the local scenery have been victims of a gang rape. The police have already begun an investigation to track down those responsible. However, this incident prompts reflection on the local situation!
Repeated rapes throughout India!
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, India recorded 31,516 cases of rape in 2022. This terrifying figure, however, does not accurately reflect the reality on the ground! In fact, many victims prefer to remain silent in the face of their aggressors due to fear or shame.
Other women who are victims of rape simply do not trust the authorities! Most local media only report on tragedies of this nature. Some lawmakers have even proposed to toughen the laws regarding penalties. However, this was already done in 2013!
Since 2018, those who commit rape on children under the age of 12 face the death penalty. However, this has not been enough to deter criminals! Worse yet, attackers are now targeting older and foreign victims.
A Spanish tourist reportedly tried to report the sexual assault his wife suffered. However, the video strangely disappeared shortly after it was published! In 2022, another bound tourist had to witness the abuse of his wife. Today, an even more dramatic case sheds light on the gravity of the situation on the ground!
The attackers spared no victims!
This aggravated rape case took place in Karnataka, a state in the south of the country. Tourists, including two Israeli women, an American, and two other Indian men, were staying at a host’s residence. Their lodging is next to the Koppal canal, where one can observe a stunning starry sky!
While they were admiring their surroundings, unknown assailants arrived on motorcycles. Initially, they asked if they had any fuel. When denied, they demanded money! Things quickly turned violent, leading to the murder of one of the Indian tourists. They also threw the other two into the canal.
The criminals did not realize that two of the men had managed to survive and made it to safety. They took their time carrying out a gang rape on the remaining two women. In an attempt to ensure they would not be identified, they sought to kill them! Fortunately, they survived this horrific ordeal.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they were met with a truly horrifying sight. The assailants did not even attempt to conceal the rapes and murders they had committed! Naturally, an investigation is currently underway to identify the perpetrators of this atrocity.
Can we still trust the Indian police?
This latest case of rape is likely to profoundly impact the tourism sector in India. Visitors will certainly think twice before coming here! To try to alleviate the situation, the President of Karnataka has personally reassured the local population.
According to him: “Our government is committed to ensuring the safety of all, including tourists, who visit the state. All necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again”. In fact, two suspects have already been apprehended!
