Unfortunately, gender-based and sexual violence have become commonplace in our society. For the feminist group Itaia, any event primarily attended by men presents an ideal opportunity to combat these issues. Hence their intrusion at the 2025 Foire au Jambon in Bayonne!
Atypical Feminist Group!
There are many feminist collectives working for women’s rights in France. However, Itaia has a very specific philosophy. Its members firmly believe that only communism can truly liberate women from oppression!
In addition to aspiring to create a socialist state, this feminist group aims to eradicate the daily violence women face. To achieve this, its members do not hesitate to engage in debates and organize awareness events throughout the Basque Country.
Since its founding in 2018, the Itaia feminist collective has broadened its scope of action to extend beyond the local dynamic. Although there is no designated leader, the members often appear in alternative media. These women are determined to create an environment where they no longer fear aggression!
Like other communities of its kind, Itaia takes every opportunity to raise public awareness about the inequality prevalent in our society. Events like the Foire au Jambon are their preferred venues. And it seems they have struck again!
An Unexpected Event Before the Contest Begins!
The Roland-Barthes esplanade has recently hosted the 562e edition of the Foire au Jambon. The event celebrates culinary delights and conviviality, showcasing Basque gastronomy. However, such gatherings are also venues for numerous sexist assaults!
Itaia is aware that inappropriate gestures, insults, and even violence often occur in these settings. These unacceptable behaviors are frequently ignored, dismissed as the effects of alcohol. This time, the feminist group opted for prevention to mitigate potential harm!
Prior to the start of the best farmer ham contest, the feminist collective seized the stage. With megaphones and banners in hand, the activists declared that this was a “festive context (that) only amplifies masculine violence”. On this point, no one can disagree, given the numerous tragedies that have occurred recently!
These feminists also admonish the local municipality, which organizes such large-scale festivities. They accuse local leaders of failing to address “the model of the festivities”. During this event, they spoke for a few minutes to present their perspective.
Have These Feminist Groups Changed Anything in France?
Throughout history, feminist activism has transformed the world. Without them, women might still spend all their time in the kitchen. However, it is essential to recognize that each era has its set of challenges to overcome. And for our time, nothing is certain yet!
Most instances of sexist violence begin online, where anything can be said or done without consequence. It is indeed very easy to conceal one’s identity on social networks. Furthermore, French legislation is not yet fully stringent regarding what happens on these platforms.
