In the face of the Russian threat, the question of the return of compulsory military service is gaining traction. But what do the main stakeholders think?
Is the government considering the return of military service?
Are the French in favor of reinstating military service? Opinions vary. According to a recent survey by the think tank Destin Commun for Ouest-France, six out of ten French people have no objections. This favorable opinion is particularly strong among those on the right and far-right, as highlighted by TF1 Infos. While the government has yet to discuss or even consider this option, the growing Russian threat prompts many in the population to question the possibility.
Indeed, on March 9, the Minister of the Armed Forces announced a new defense budget projected at around 100 billion euros per year. This signals an arms race reminiscent of pre-war periods, raising concerns among European populations.
Specifically, the study indicates a favorable response rate of 72% among Republican supporters, 77% among National Rally supporters, and 35% among those who identify with La France Insoumise.
43% of 18-24-Year-Olds in Favor
It is also noteworthy that opinions differ based on age. Nearly 72% of individuals over 65 support the return of military service, whereas only 43% of those aged 18-24 feel the same. This is a significant point, as this age group would be directly affected in the event of mobilization.

During an interview with RTL, the youth’s reservations about military service were evident. While some contemplate mobilization without issue, others express their reluctance. “Investing in the army should be a choice, not an obligation. If French soldiers are to be sent out, they should be well-trained soldiers, not those who completed a year of military service at 18,” protested a student.
This sentiment is shared by many others. Moreover, Emmanuel Macron himself seems to echo this sentiment, suggesting that the presence of professional soldiers reduces the likelihood of mobilizing the population in times of war. However, he still encourages young people to commit to serving the nation.
