Motorcycle: The license plate is now mandatory at the front of the vehicle!

The reform intended to revolutionize the motorcycle world has come into effect. License plates are now required to be positioned at the front of the vehicle, rather than at the back. This radical change comes with questionable justifications that may not please all motorcycle enthusiasts.

🚦 A Change for Road Safety

According to the authorities, the stated objective is clear: to improve safety on the roads and specifically to enhance the identification of motorcycles in circulation. Until now, rear plates could be inadvertently obscured by luggage, passengers, or simply become difficult to read due to traffic conditions and viewing angles.

With this reform, front plates will allow law enforcement and other road users to more easily spot motorcycles. During traffic jams, where motorcycles often weave between lanes, identification becomes immediate. Experts suggest that this could even encourage greater responsibility among riders and help reduce certain violations.

📸 A Plate at the Front to Optimize Radars

One of the most debated arguments concerns the increased effectiveness of automatic radars. Indeed, many devices have struggled to capture images of motorcycles accurately, especially during speeding violations, due to the visibility of the rear plate.

With the addition of a front plate, front-facing radars will now easily read the registration as the motorcycle approaches. This means not only better detection of infractions but also fewer disputes during penalties. This change could potentially increase the revenues from fines, a fact that hasn’t gone unnoticed and is causing frustration within the motorcycling community.

💸 A Costly Bill for Riders

While the measure aims to enhance safety, the cost remains a sensitive issue. In addition to purchasing the front plate, motorcyclists will often need to modify their bike to accommodate this new accessory. Some models were not designed to attach a front plate, which will require specific mounts or even professional installation.

According to several industry experts, the total cost (plate + installation) could range between €80 and €200, depending on the model and necessary equipment. This is a significant expense that adds to the already high maintenance costs of two-wheelers.

🏁 Mixed Reactions in the Motorcycle Community

Unsurprisingly, many motorcyclists are contesting the reform. Clubs, associations, and enthusiasts criticize the measure as being more about facilitating fines rather than truly improving safety. For many, the placement of a front plate could even spoil the aesthetics of the motorcycle and create additional aerodynamic and safety risks in the event of a fall.

Some voices are already calling for exemptions for vintage or collectible motorcycles, for which adding a front plate could distort the original character of the vehicle. Others hope for a relaxation of the measure in the future, or even a complete withdrawal if protests continue to grow.

📍 Where to Install Your Plate?

If you are affected, know that it is already possible to equip yourself at certain specialized garages or accessory shops. In Paris, for example, the Rue de la Poissonnière (2nd arrondissement) is recommended by several motorcyclists for finding suitable plates and mounts for your bike.

The installation must comply with the specific attachment and tilt regulations set forth by the new rules. It is advisable to go through a professional to avoid any unpleasant surprises during an inspection or homologation.
