When I arrived at school this semester, the falling flurries and piles of snow all over campus welcomed me back to the beautiful Ithaca winter. For the past few weeks, it has snowed almost every day. From blizzards to flurries, there have been many fun days to play in the snow. The weather has become the center of my attention—outside of academics of course.

One of my favorite things to do on snow days is to wear sweats, make some hot chocolate, and watch movies. Living in a house this semester, I am fortunate enough to have a comfy couch and living room with a TV where I can stream tons of movies. With so many streaming platforms, it can be hard to navigate what’s available to watch and where it can be found. Since there have already been so many snow days this semester, I thought it would be fun to list some of my favorite movies streamed so far.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: Always and Forever (Found on Netflix)

First, and probably most expected, is Netflix’s third version of its romance trilogy. Starring Noah Centineo and Lana Condor, viewers get to experience the final film tracking these characters’ iconic love story and high school experience. As their senior year and the college process begins, the couple undergoes good and bad times. Lara Jean, played by Condor, undergoes self-discovery as she thinks about her relationship with Peter, played by Centineo, and her future after high school. It’s a great cheesy rom-com to watch with friends while eating some ice cream.

Dirty Dancing (Found on HBOMax and Hulu)

I saw this movie for the first time this semester, which is honestly a little embarrassing to admit. Over 30 years after its release, it’s still a hit. Baby, played by Jennifer Grey, spends the summer with her family at a camp, where she finds her unexpected love of dancing along with her perfect match. You’ll have the time of your life watching, to say the least.

Bombshell (Found on Hulu)

This movie is based on a true story, and I personally do not believe it gets the attention it deserves. Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, and Charlize Theron play three news reporters who were sexually harassed by Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox News. Theron plays Megyn Kelly, Robbie plays Kayla Pospisil, and Kidman plays Gretchen Carlson. They tell their traumatic stories of what occurred when working at a highly regarded news network. The film goes over gender roles, feminist power, and the reality of women working in the media industry. Being that I never knew these particular events happened in real life, it’s important that these horrific acts get continued recognition.

Sex and the City the Movie (Found on Netflix)

Based on the iconic TV series, this version of the story takes place from the same plot as the show. Carrie Bradshaw, a fashion icon and writer, gets ready to take a step in her relationship with Big, and just as everything seems to be going great, things take a turn for the worse. At the same time, Carrie’s three best friends, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, undergo hardships of their own. The movie covers all of their lives at this point in time, and how all of their problems magically blend together. This movie is great to watch, even if you’ve never seen the TV show before, and it takes up a large chunk of the day since it’s two and a half hours long.

Superbad (Found on Netflix and Hulu)

Do I need to explain more? McLovin will always make you laugh, and this movie never fails to disappoint, even after watching it over five times. Judd Apatow creates his great comedy as Jonah Hill and Michael Cera finish off their senior year of high school trying to impress the girls of their dreams before it’s too late. As the nerdy trio tries to make themselves popular, they get themselves into situations where they’re willing to risk it all to get their one night of fame.

These are just a few of the many options available on streaming platforms, and the ones I have been able to fit into my schedule this semester. There are so many other films I am looking forward to watching including Soul on Disney+, What Men Want on Hulu, and Ocean’s Eleven on Netflix. Even though March has begun, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ithaca has several more snow days to come. These movies are also great if you just want to have a cozy night in. Regardless, take some time to relax and enjoy these movies; we all need a break from reality sometimes, especially during the pandemic.
